Our Slice Adventures

In 1992, my Dad was working at Nature's Way which at the time was Murdock Healthcare as a maintenance man. George Murdock owned a small pizzeria called Slice-A-Pizza in the Orem mall located in Gallery 28 by Dungeons and Dragons. George's wife's parents passed away so he decided to close the pizzeria and move to California to run the winery and asked Dad to get rid of the equipment from the mall location. Dad asked him if he could buy the equipment and for $500 Dad and Mom started on a new adventure. They set up originally in an old convenience store on Main Street in Mapleton and after a few years the mayor would not renew the lease and they were forced to search for another location. They found and started the purchase of the old cafe on the Highway and called it The Cowboy Way Cafe and by adding onto the building brought Slice in with it. Our family ran it for for a few more years and trouble with the Owner forced us out of the building and the decision was made to not reopen... until Dad and I had a reminiscing one night and so next thing, off to California to pick up some equipment. We rented a little building at 132 W 900 N in Spanish Fork and on July 1, 2009 had our Grand Opening. We often had the High School kids in. Austin was a student and played on the football team so we counted on him and Richie to pack them in. We looked into some warmers and started selling slices and an all-you-can-eat buffet. The boys went to New Mexico and picked up a salad bar, it was a hit! Business grew each month by marginal numbers and by the winter Jan/Feb 2010 in what they are calling The Great Recession, business started to slow. We cut back on inventory and payroll. I began working open to close nearly every day unless I was sick or had a planned night off. The whole family helped out, we were working nonstop. Business picked back up about April/May but then again plateaued back out. Things were doing well as long as we budgeted correctly and kept our payroll low. Dad after being with Nature's Way for 26 years, finally got a job offer and we were expecting another baby. After family meetings we made the decision that by the time we were to hire enough employees and managers to run the shop our profitability would be zero and so we closed.
